The defending state champions, the Judge Memorial Bulldogs, came to Grantsville to take on the Cowboys. The Judge line up consists of 3 D1 signees with 2 of those players having MLB draft potential. Those that attended the game saw one of them, AJ Carmen come to the plate with 1 out and 1 on in the first inning and blast a 2-run home run and the Bulldogs never looked back. Carmen also threw 2 innings allowing 1 hit and striking out 5. Carmen has already committed to Washington State. Court Zollinger, who has signed with UVU, was 3 for 3 on the day with 1 double and 2 singles. Kenyan Walker was held in check at the plate with only 1 hit, he threw 2 innings on the mound striking out 4 and allowing 2 hits and 1 run. Walker did make a play in CF to end the game on a ball hit by Taylor Matthews in the left centerfield gap that no other HS player in the state makes. Matt Gochis, a Tooele transfer, had 2 hits and 3 rbi's on the day for Judge. Highlights for the Cowboys were doubles by Tyson Hutchins & Lincoln Kelley. Ryley Boman played well defensively having 7 assists on the day from his shortstop position.
Grantsville is next scheduled to take the field against the Juan Diego Soaring Eagles Friday in Sandy at 3:30. Juan Diego placed 2nd in the state tournament in 2008 and are currently ranked #1 in the state. They are coached by Steve Cramblitt who coached Taylorsville to multiple state titles back in the 90's. He led Juan Diego to a couple of 2A titles before they moved up to 3A. The game will provide another big challenge for the Cowboys or a great opportunity, depending on your point of view.

I think this preseason has allowed the Cowboys to find out who they are, as well as their teammates. Even though they have a few consecutive losses, it's easy to see they are coming together as a team. When region play begins they will be right in line to get things started when it really counts! Keep up the good work and good luck against Juan Diego!
